Vertical vs Horizontal Scaling: How to Add Budget Without Breaking ROAS

Most accounts don't collapse because the offer stopped working. They collapse because budget was added the wrong way. Here's how to tell the two methods apart and when to use each.

What is the difference between vertical and horizontal scaling?

Vertical raises budget on what already exists. Horizontal adds new campaigns, audiences, placements or markets. Vertical extracts more from what works; horizontal creates new room to work in.

Which should I do first?

Horizontal, if frequency is climbing, because more budget into a saturated audience raises cost without raising results. Vertical first only makes sense when there is still headroom where you already are.

Why does raising the budget sometimes cut ROAS immediately?

Two reasons at once: a large single-step increase can reset the learning phase, and the extra budget reaches further into a less responsive audience. Smaller increments avoid both.

Can I scale vertically and horizontally at the same time?

You can, but then you can't attribute the outcome to either. Changing one variable at a time is slower and leaves you with knowledge you can reuse.
