Google Ads Q3 2026: Six Changes, One of Which Will Move Your Numbers Whether You Act or Not

A bidding change that quietly removes a hidden advantage, experiments that finally test what you care about, and a disclosure box you may now be obliged to tick. What shifted and what each one asks of you.

What changed with Google Ads Smart Bidding in August 2026?

From 17 August 2026, under a change called Bidding Target Optimization, campaigns limited by budget optimise toward the Target CPA or Target ROAS you set rather than benefiting from an undocumented layer that skimmed the cheapest conversions. Campaigns that used to beat their target while budget-capped will drift toward it.

Why did my CPA increase in late August 2026 with no campaign changes?

Most likely the Bidding Target Optimization change that took effect on 17 August 2026. If a budget-limited campaign had been outperforming its target, that advantage has been removed and the campaign now aims at the number you entered. Check your targets before investigating creative or seasonality.

Can I run an A/B test across multiple Google Ads Search campaigns?

Yes. Google announced multi-campaign experiments on 20 August 2026, rolling out through September, letting you vary budgets and ROI targets across several Search campaigns in one test. Experiments run as a traffic split inside existing campaigns, so budget and learning history stay intact.

What reporting does AI Max provide?

The search terms report shows the query, the generated headline and the landing page that served together. The landing pages report separates URLs you supplied from those chosen by Final URL Expansion. Asset reporting measures spend and conversions rather than impressions alone.

Which campaigns upgrade to AI Max automatically?

Search campaigns using Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match upgrade automatically from September 2026. New Dynamic Search Ads campaigns can no longer be created from the same month, and remaining DSA campaigns follow in February 2027.

Do I have to disclose AI-generated ads on Google?

Yes, when third-party tools were used. Assets made with Google's own generative features are labelled automatically in the My Ad Center panel called How this ad was made. Assets created or altered with external tools require you to declare it through a control in Google Ads, on a self-attestation basis.

Did Google expand product-level reporting in Q3 2026?

The expansion actually arrived on 15 June 2026, in Q2. It added full network data for Performance Max and brought Video, Demand Gen and App campaigns into product-level reporting, which previously covered only Performance Max on Search and Standard Shopping.
